“I welcome the recognition by the Dutch Government of Romania’s willingness to join Schengen as an essential step to achieve this goal, possible through dialogue and cooperation. The Netherlands is a valuable partner of our country. We are determined to continue working together”, wrote Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogan Aurescu wrote on Twitter on Friday that he is happy to welcome today’s positive assessment and the position of the Dutch government in support of Romania’s Schengen accession.

PNL MEP Siegfried Mureşan announces in a post on Facebook that the Government of the Netherlands has decided and the Netherlands supports Romania’s accession to the Schengen area.

“The Dutch government has decided: The Netherlands supports Romania’s accession to the Schengen area. Romania managed to respond in the last weeks to all the requests of the Dutch authorities”, states the MEP.

Mureşan mentions that, “following the fulfillment of all the conditions and all the commitments assumed by us, the Government of the Netherlands has just adopted a positive position towards Romania’s accession to the Schengen area”.

“It is a reason for joy for all of us. It is an impulse to continue working on this file”, writes Mureşan.

A short time ago, the Government of Sweden also managed to obtain the support of the Parliament and received a positive mandate to vote on Romania’s accession to the Schengen area.

The Dutch government gives the green light to the accession of Romania and Croatia to Schengen, but maintains its “firm” opposition and “refuses to accept” that Bulgaria joins the free movement area. The Cabinet in The Hague still believes that it is too early for Bulgaria, which could still join next year, writes the “Volkskrant” publication, quoted by News.ro, on Friday.

According to the Dutch publication “Volkskrant”, Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra made this announcement on Friday, after the end of a government meeting.
